"The spacious main library was opened in 1964, according to its website. Built of Indiana limestone, the library offered guests an auditorium, conference rooms, and two full floors for shelving, a vast improvement over the previous Carnegie Library building.
Now, as library board member Sadie Sheffield told the Post-Tribune, that handsome building will become "another eyesore to grow grass around."

A Wisconsin Wind Blows In | New Haven Independent

"There were teachers, laborers, steelworkers, Teamsters, Yale union workers and city workers. Walking alongside them were parents, kids and students; old-school activists and youngsters making first forays into protest. The sea of faces was diverse, in terms of race, ethnicity, age and class.
“I grew up in a family that remembers when,” said Cohen, 66, who lives on George Street. She’s descended from garment workers and others who fought for better working conditions, and struck when they didn’t get them.
Cohen said those gains are threatened now, in places like Wisconsin, Michigan—and New Haven, where employers from Yale to City Hall have been eliminating hundreds of jobs amid the recession. That makes her sad.
“I came just because I’m appalled at what’s going on in this country,” she said."

SURPRISE! New Hampshire Passes “Companion” Bill Stripping Bargaining Rights a Day Early wepartypatriots.com/wp/2011/03/31/… #1u
"A protest expecting upwards of 5,000 demonstrators is scheduled for Noon at the New Hampshire Capitol in Concord today. Ironworkers and other members of the New Hampshire Building Trades have already begun to gather. The website NH Cares is a complete resource for rally questions.
WMUR in NH reports that the bill that could end collective bargaining for state employees came “a day earlier than expected”:
The amendment makes unionized government workers at-will employees if their contracts expire.
“You can’t go to arbitration, you can’t file grievances — our grievance procedures and all of the benefits spelled out are located in our collective bargaining agreements. Once they expire, once we become at-will employees, they’re gone,” said Stephen Arnold, of the New England Police Benevolent Association.
Arnold called the GOP effort an attack on public employees."

"Are you tired of big banks making record profits, paying giant executive salaries and bonuses and then cooking the books so they avoid paying taxes? We are. And, we are responding. Join us.
On April 15 in Union Square Park in New York City at 11:00 AM we are holding a "Sounds of Resistance Concert" and protest against the big corporate banks that have undermined the U.S. economy and displaced families from their homes. Big Finance has taken more than a trillion from the Department of Treasury and Federal Reserve to pay for their casino gambling on Wall Street but they are still forcing people out of their homes, not lending to small businesses and choking the economy."

Maine does not have any political process for citizens to recall elected officials, unlike 18 other states. The Maine state constitution provides for impeachment, a legal process, but its never been used to remove a civil officer.

The events featured select candidates who were running for office, including gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker, Attorney General candidate J.B. Van Hollen, judicial candidate David T. "Madison - In the midst of the controversy of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's ties to David Koch and Koch Industries, the Center for Media and Democracy has conducted an analysis of the headliners at Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity (AFP) conventions in the state in the past two years. The events featured select candidates who were running for office, including gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker, Attorney General candidate J.B. Van Hollen, judicial candidate David T. Prosser, Jr., and Congressman James Sensenbrenner. The AFP events also featured an array of national speakers who have supported AFP and its "Tea Party" related activities."

"The state Public Service Commission is poised Friday to approve selection of a Louisiana corporation with a history of environmental violations to manage Wisconsin's popular Focus on Energy program.
Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure Inc., a subsidiary of the Baton Rouge-based Shaw Group, was selected by an evaluation committee that included four representatives of Wisconsin's investor-owned utilities.
Shaw also has some ties to Koch Industries, the Wichita, Kan., firm that has been a big booster of embattled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. But there is no indication that Koch Industries would profit from the deal."

Austerity Games, Here And There
Early last year, many people on both sides of the Atlantic seized on the idea that less is more — that cutting spending would actually help, not hinder, recovery. There was a paper by Alesina and Ardagna that seemed to provide evidence to that effect, and nothing succeeds like telling people what they want to hear.

The Tragedy of David Prosser And: The Journal Sentinel’s The Tragedy of David Prosser Odd Editorials. by: Bruce Murphy | Tuesday 3/29/2011
Inside Milwaukee - Dine, Shop, Entertainment and more.
"Prosser, in short, has reason to complain, but his protest could hardly be more ironic. For as a state Supreme Court Justice, Prosser had a chance to send a message about a far worse ad, the one by Michael Gableman, when he ran against then-Justice Louis Butler. The ad accused Butler of using a loophole to get a child sex offender out of jail early, thus enabling the man to commit another crime. In fact the criminal served his full sentence and only then committed another crime. This ad, moreover, was not by some shadowy third party, but was run by Gableman’s campaign. Finally, it was ugly in its racial connotation: Gableman sought to link Butler, a black justice, with a black criminal."

"On last night's episode of her show, Maddow described the response she got from Mackinac and the donors that fund it when she asked about the FOIAs: nervous silence.
The Prince Foundation, which is owned by the parents of the founder of Blackwater, were particularly uninterested in discussing the story.
"The Prince Foundation did not so much say 'no' to us as they did say 'we have no idea what you are talking about,' and then they seemed very alarmed that we had called them," Maddow told viewers. "And then they hung up on us.""

Rep. McDermott: GOP Cuts to anti-poverty programs are ‘morally wrong’ + ‘fiscally stupid’ [VIDEO] http://thkpr.gs/gru6T1
"The current continuing resolution under which the federal government is operating expires on April 8, and at the moment, it seems that budget talks between House Republican leadership and Senate Democrats have broken down. NY has the highest income inequality in the US. Gov Cuomo is NOT helping this http://mojo.ly/gPvIXm

"There is no country in the industrial world with as great an income disparity between the rich and poor as the United States. And within the US, there is no state where the disparity is more pronounced than New York. New York City was the center of the Great Recession, and today unemployment there stands at 9 percent and is not expected to drop any time soon. At the same time, the financial sector that caused it all has recovered nicely, and the executives are pulling down salaries and perks larger than they did before the recession."

"Magnitudes: dirty money, lost taxes and offshore"
"The size of the offshore economy is hard to measure precisely, as a result of its fragmented nature, difficulties involved in defining it, and a pervasive culture of secrecy. International efforts to measure it often focus only on narrow aspects of it. For example, much effort is expended on measuring and tackling terrorist finances or (to a lesser extent) international bribery, but little attention is paid to problems on much, much larger scales -- such as commercial transfer mispricing abuses."

Revolutions build over long periods — to critical mass, a flash point. Then they ignite suddenly, unpredictably. Like Egypt, started on a young Google executive’s Facebook page. Then it goes viral, raging uncontrollably. Can’t be stopped. Here in America the set-up is our nation’s pervasive “Super-Rich Delusion.”"

"The recall campaign against Sen. Randy Hopper (R-Fond du Lac) appears to have enough signatures to force a recall election, though volunteers don't plan to stop collecting them before next week.
Scott Dillman, a former Department of Corrections employee who is one of the campaign's coordinators, wouldn't say directly Tuesday that volunteers had collected the 15,269 signatures required to force the election. But he said that volunteers were planning a last push for signatures on election day next Tuesday, and that he's hoping that the total collected will be "closer to 30,000 than 15,000.""

The #student-led movement opposing budget cuts is growing in America. http://bit.ly/eUDk2t #USuncut #austerity
"Students at Arizona universities rallied to oppose $235 million in cuts to their universities’ budgets, and a labor-student coalition in Florida led about 300 protesters through the streets to protest Gov. Scott’s proposal to cut 5 to 10 percent (about $3 billion) from public education.
People often ask me why students in the US haven’t organized a massive resistance like the one we’re witnessing in the UK. My answer to that is there is resistance in this country. It isn’t centralized and overwhelming…yet, but it is most definitely rising to the surface and beginning to spill over."

"The tea party has a new plan to attack health care reform. While some conservative activists are still fighting to get the law defunded and eventually repealed, others are organizing behind a radical, states'-rights proposal that would go beyond merely derailing health reform. Egged on by tea partiers, at least a dozen states are now contemplating legislation that supporters believe would allow them to seize control of and administer virtually all federal health care programs operating in their states and exempt them from the requirements of the health care law. That includes Medicare, the government health care program for the elderly on which a sizable number of tea partiers rely."

Daily Kos: Wisconsin -- How To Get Petitions Signed By The Cart-Full
Daily Kos: Wisconsin -- How To Get Petitions Signed By The Cart-Full
"I've found that the best place to collect signatures is outside polling places during elections. Instead of having to go look for people, they are coming to you -- sometimes in droves. Instead of wondering whether they are eligible to sign the petition, you can rest assured because they're walking to vote. Instead of getting them one or two at a time per household, you're sometimes getting them as fast as you can get people to sign. You can put in a full 12 hour day, and start signing people up as early as 7 in the morning -- even before they get to work. In essence, when done fully, such a project will result in petitions by the cart-full, especially for an issue as well publicized as that of recalling the white-right poster villains."

"Even with the concessions, Bauer said Democrats are probably not going to vote in favor of Daniels' education reforms, or other parts of the legislative agenda they railed against from across the Indiana border. But Republicans don't need their votes -- they have a big enough majority to pass anything they want -- but they do need the Democrats in the room to get a quorum. They'll get that now, but Bauer says Democrats have made their point, and shifted the Republican-led agenda back in their direction.
"We've protected working people from a march to the minimum wage. We've protected collective bargaining rights for Hoosier workers and teachers. We've softened the blow to public schools and prevented a bill for private takeover of public schools," he said. "This timeout gave millions of Hoosiers a real voice in their state government.""

"Can we point to specific pieces of legislation or specific agency decisions that have retarded wage growth? In fact, we can—things like tax policy, financial deregulation, the decline of antitrust enforcement, and anti-union rulings by the NLRB all played a role. By themselves, though, these just aren't enough to account for what's happened. So what's the smoking gun when it comes to the impact of politics on wage stagnation and growing income inequality?
I think Lane Kenworthy fingered the right culprit a few weeks ago: the abandonment in recent decades of full employment as even a rhetorical goal of American economic policy:"

"– Wisconsin, The Kochs and the 2010 Election: Last fall ThinkProgress reported that a coalition of Wisconsin Tea Party and Koch-funded groups, in an effort to stop “voter fraud” and prevent “stolen elections,” was planning a sophisticated voter caging effort that would use GOP lawyers and Tea Party volunteers to challenge the eligibility of voters at polls in the state. Earlier that year, the same groups were instrumental in defeating a voter protection law that would have criminalized any attempt to use force or coercion to “compel any person to refrain from voting.” One prominent Tea Party member behind the voter caging effort that “since the voter law did not get passed this year… we can still do this.”

What can we expect to come? As I see it, there are two tactical moves from the Republicans we can anticipate:
1: Without a doubt, outside groups will jump in right before the April 5th Supreme Court election with shocking negative anti-Kloppenburg ads. Don’t be surprised, and don’t give the opposition the satisfaction of seeing us freak out. There will probably be very little time to respond in the media and at the phones. He's right. Signs are political speech and the police have no constitutional right to take away signs. Gov. Walker has been over stepping his bounds and has no right to do many of the things that he's been doing against the protesters.

The battle to define Charles and David Koch - Kenneth P. Vogel - POLITICO.com
"Virtually unknown as recently as 2009, the Kochs have become political household names, following in the footsteps of other wealthy bankers and industrialists such as the 19th century Robber Barons – the Fricks, Harrimans and Rockefellers – who have been targets of progressives and reformers. But the new prominence of the Kochs is a case study in the kinds of 21st century big-money branding battles that underlie many Washington political and policy fights. It features one side using all the means of modern political communications to put a face on its opponents – and the other side furiously fighting back using its own techniques.
The Kochs – each of whom is worth a reported $21.5 billion as a result of their stakes in Koch Industries, the family owned oil, chemical and consumer products business – have been donating millions of dollars to small-government conservative causes and candidates for decades."

Organizer Scott Dillman says he's sure they have enough signatures to trigger the recall, but he can't give exact figures yet. He says, processing all the information they've collected so far will take a week. They need 15,000 signatures to trigger the recall and he had originally set a goal of 20,000 by April first. He says he should have set that goal higher. Once Dillman tallies and submits his petition, a candidate will have to step up to run against hopper in the recall, which could happen by this summer."

"The New York Times reported today that General Electric’s effective tax rate in 2010 was zero. Despite making $14.2 billion in profits, the company received $3.2 billion in tax benefits.
