Officials dispute reliability of Waukesha County clerk's election data system - JSOnline
"Waukesha — Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus' decision to go it alone in how she collects and maintains election results has some county officials raising a red flag about the integrity of the system.
Nickolaus said she decided to take the election data collection and storage system off the county's computer network - and keep it on stand-alone personal computers accessible only in her office - for security reasons.
"What it gave me was good security of the elections from start to finish, without the ability of someone unauthorized to be involved," she said."Full Article Here - JSOnline

Corporate America's State Level Bloodless Coup Against Democracy
Corporate America's State Level Bloodless Coup Against Democracy
"If Republicans like Walker and Snyder are allowed to continue their Nazi tactics by disregarding the will of the voters and the courts, America will become a dictatorship. For two years Republicans in Congress worked tirelessly to circumvent the law and now that they have control of the House, they are snubbing their noses at the voters. They lied to get elected by promising to create jobs, but instead have worked to cut services and jobs as well as repeal laws passed in the last Congress. Americans appear to finally see Republicans for what they really are; power-hungry corporatists who hate the American people and the law. If they are allowed to continue, American democracy will be finished and in its place will be a dictatorship run by corporations and religious leaders who, like Republicans, have no regard for the law or the will of the people. Americans united to fight the Nazi threat in World War II, now they must unite to fight the Republican Nazi threat in America and elect leaders who do not defy the law."Full Article Here

About six dozen demonstrators planned on staying the night at the state Capitol.
Protest inside Washington State Capitol
OLYMPIA — A rally to urge state lawmakers to close corporate tax loopholes, rather than cut back health care, social services and education, started with hundreds of protesters, then turned into a sleepover for about six dozen in the state Capitol Wednesday night.
"Our goal today was to disrupt business as usual because obviously we've marched and rallied, and we're still seeing more and more cuts," said Fatima Morales, a spokeswoman for the Washington Community Action Network, which helped bring together more than three dozen advocacy groups."

Melissa Harris-Perry on the Demonization of Public Services | The Nation
"Hasn’t a shutdown been the GOP’s goal the entire time? The Nation’s Melissa Harris-Perry agreed with Rachel Maddow on her show last night that many of the programs—and individuals—that have been targeted for funding cuts are beloved in American society; post office employees, teachers, Medicare. But the Republican Party, with little resistance from Democratic leaders, has been able to successfully demonize these figures and programs."Full Article| The Nation

Al Franken keeping eye on Epsilon breach - Tony Romm - POLITICO.com
" By TONY ROMM | 4/7/11 11:15 AM EDT
Add Sen. Al Franken to the growing list of members casting a skeptical eye on Epsilon.
A data breach that allowed hackers access to the names and email addresses of consumers who do business with Target, Best Buy, TiVo and other Epsilon clients led Franken (D-Minn.) on Thursday to vow to “do more to protect Americans’ digital information.”
“This is one of the largest data breaches in history,” said Franken, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s new privacy panel.
“Yet most of the people affected by the Epsilon breach had never heard of that company before this week,” he told POLITICO in a statement.
“We need to give Americans more awareness about who has their information and greater ability to protect it,” Franken added. The breach “threatens the privacy of countless Minnesotans and has affected major Minnesota employers.”
Franken said he wanted to explore these issues more as chairman of the new Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law.

According to Hasen: ""No Proof Of Any Systemic Fraud Has Been Unearthed." In an April 6 Politico column, election law expert Richard Hasen discussed the "razor-thin" electoral results in Wisconsin and noted:
A recount in this race, which some view as a referendum on Gov. Scott Walker's anti-union policies, seems inevitable, and it is not clear who will ultimately take the seat on the Wisconsin bench. But if this expensive and nasty race ends up in protracted litigation, it could undermine public confidence in both the judiciary and Wisconsin's electoral process, especially if, as I expect, supporters of Prosser raise ugly allegations of voter fraud." Janesville - Rock County: The Revolution Is On
Janesville - Rock County: The Revolution Is On
"The revolution taking place in Wisconsin must go beyond its borders. In Congress, Wisconsin's ideologically poisoned congressman Paul Ryan has proposed a plan that will abolish Medicare within 10 years. Every person under the age of 55 today will not have the quality and equitable health care guarantee that seniors enjoy today. Ryan blames the federal government, Medicare and Medicaid for the greed-driven high costs of the private health care industry. His position with Big Insurance is the same position he holds for Big Oil. He thinks their profits should be padded by deleveraging seniors with tax subsidized vouchers. The price at the pump isn't high enough. Ryan's plan is so far out there that it offers no room for compromise - just like Walker."

Business and Investors Against Tax Haven Abuse
Click Here for Full Article: Business and Investors Against Tax Haven Abuse
"Responsible businesses and banks are hurt when other firms use tax havens to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. In using tax havens, companies like Best Buy and General Electric, for example, shift their responsibility for taxes to the local appliance store or community bank.
There is no justification for tax avoidance and evasion through tax havens. Offshore tax havens provide cover for banks, hedge funds and corporations to shift taxable income from the United States for the sole purpose of escaping taxation. Tax haven secrecy allows wealthy Americans to hide assets, helps companies manipulate their finances, and fosters the casino economy. McClatchy News reported, for example, how working through Cayman Island subsidiaries, Goldman Sachs “peddled billions of dollars in shaky securities tied to subprime mortgages on unsuspecting pension funds, insurance companies and other investors when it concluded that the housing bubble would burst.”

Restore the Top Tax Rates
We, the undersigned, call on Congress and President Obama to allow the Bush-era tax cuts for those with taxable incomes over $200,000 (individual) and $250,000 (couple) to expire on Dec. 31, 2010. The increased revenue, an estimated $700 billion over 10 years, should go toward making long overdue investments in education, health, job creation, renewable energy, transportation and other infrastructure.

"Democrats say that Boehner is being swayed by the influence of the tea party movement and have urged him to make a break for the sake of a bipartisan agreement, but the speaker did not indicate that he’s willing to do so. “I’m fighting for the largest number of spending cuts possible,” Boehner said. “Because it really will help our economy. This is what the American people had to say last November. They wanted us to cut spending in Washington, D.C. and they wanted us to do everything we could to help create jobs in our country.”"

"Brian Deschane - the 27-year-old son of a prominent lobbyist - was demoted on Tuesday following a public uproar over his appointment to a cushy job earning $81,500 per year working in Gov. Scott Walker's administration.
But check out the two candidates Deschane beat out to get the position as head of environmental and regulatory affairs in the state Department of Commerce:
The first, Oscar Herrera, is a former state cabinet secretary under Republican Gov. Scott McCallum with a doctoral degree and eight years' experience overseeing the cleanup of petroleum-contaminated sites.
The second, Bernice Mattsson, is a professional engineer who served since 2003 in the post to which Deschane was appointed.
By contrast, Deschane has no college degree, little management experience and a couple of drunken-driving convictions. His father represents a trade group that gave more than $121,000 to Walker and his running mate.
Herrera and Mattsson didn't get far in the process.

"And “this” has transformed itself from protests at the Capitol building to hundreds of protests around the state of Wisconsin, recalls against 8 Republicans Senators (1 of which has already turned in its required signatures), and a come-from-behind candidate who has won an election she was not wagered to win 6 months ago: Joanne Kloppenburg our newest Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice.
Scott Walker is next. Enough votes were cast in yesterday’s usually sleepy spring election to recall our governor. This would be only the 3rd time it will occur in U.S. history."
