One of the most poignant moments belonged to the Rev. Marvin McMickle of Antioch Baptist Church, who told how a great-uncle was shot dead in Kentucky in 1930 for demanding to register to vote.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "More than 150 people filled the basement of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church on Saturday to hear legislators denounce what has come to be known as Ohio Senate Bill 5, saying it strips away collective-bargaining rights of public employees and will disproportionately affect the black community.

It was a town-hall meeting setting, and many of the comments drew standing ovations from audience members at the East Side Cleveland church. Local speakers were joined by a Wisconsin legislator who is embroiled in a similar fight in her state. She said the issues cross state lines." Full Article | cleveland.com

Voter Suppression Bills Sweep the Country | Center for Media and Democracy

Voter Suppression Bills Sweep the Country | Center for Media and Democracy

"A wave of voter suppression legislation is emerging from newly elected GOP governors and Republican legislators that would make it much more difficult for traditional Democratic constituencies to vote -- just in time for the 2012 election. About a dozen states are are actively considering legislation that would make voting much more difficult for college students, minorities, the elderly and the disabled. In some states, like Ohio, it is estimated that close to 1 million people would be affected by these changes." Full Article Here | Center for Media and Democracy

"Last night, the Massachusetts House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill (111-42) to strip public-sector workers of their ability to bargain collectively for healthcare. The rhetoric surrounding the bill, proposed by Democratic State House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, is in many ways similar to what Wisconsinites recently heard as Gov. Walker pushed his infamous unionbusting bill."

Stop anti-immigrant legislation in Wisconsin: What is wrong with the Pridemore Bill | Defend Wisconsin

Stop anti-immigrant legislation in Wisconsin: What is wrong with the Pridemore Bill | Defend Wisconsin

"The proposed law would enable any law enforcement agency in the state to be given the capacity to detain an individual suspected of committing a crime for 48 hours if that person is unable to produce an identification document that establishes “proof of legal presence” in the state. Failure to produce such proof within 48 hours would require law enforcement to contact the Department of Homeland Security immigration and customs authorities. It would also require the law enforcement to transfer the individual over to federal custody and possibly out of state.

The Milwaukee-based group Voces de la Frontera has pointed out that the following behaviors are classified as crimes in certain jurisdictions in Wisconsin: jay-walking, extreme noise, barking dogs, not having a dog or cat license for a pet, public spitting, skateboard/roller skate violations, leaving keys inside a parked vehicle, public smoking violations, playing baseball outside designated areas, street auto repair, youth curfew violations. This list was compiled by Voces de la Frontera in their document “Questions about the Pridemore Bill.”"

SURPRISE! New Hampshire Passes “Companion” Bill Stripping Bargaining Rights a Day Early wepartypatriots.com/wp/2011/03/31/… #1u

"A protest expecting upwards of 5,000 demonstrators is scheduled for Noon at the New Hampshire Capitol in Concord today. Ironworkers and other members of the New Hampshire Building Trades have already begun to gather. The website NH Cares is a complete resource for rally questions.

WMUR in NH reports that the bill that could end collective bargaining for state employees came “a day earlier than expected”:

The amendment makes unionized government workers at-will employees if their contracts expire.

“You can’t go to arbitration, you can’t file grievances — our grievance procedures and all of the benefits spelled out are located in our collective bargaining agreements. Once they expire, once we become at-will employees, they’re gone,” said Stephen Arnold, of the New England Police Benevolent Association.

Arnold called the GOP effort an attack on public employees."
