A local politician and organizers are in a state of emergency as they continue their attempt to stop a piece of legislation they claim will make it increasingly difficult for Wisconsin residents convicted of a felony to find and maintain employment.
Wisconsin State Senate Bill 207 aims to override existing state fair employment legislation and permit "an employer to refuse to employ or to bar or terminate from employment an individual who has been convicted of a felony and who has not been pardoned for that felony and preempting cities, villages, towns, and counties from adopting provisions concerning employment discrimination based on arrest or conviction record that prohibit activity that is allowed under the state fair employment law." (Wisconsin State Legislature Proposal Listing, Full Text of Senate Bill 207)
The proposed bill will nullify any city or county legislation that would attempt to to delay the disclosure of felony convictions in order to prevent discriminatory hiring practices including the ordinance recently approved by the Milwaukee County Board. On September 29th, the Board unanimously approved "Ban the Box" legislation sponsored by County Supervisor Eyon Biddle of the 10th District. In a press release Biddle stated the legislation was "an important first step in preventing recidivism and encouraging reforms to hiring practices."
The proposed changes to Wisconsin's fair employment legislation have Biddle, local activists, and citizens in a hurry to bring attention to the legislation.

The notion of taking over Wall Street clearly resonates with communities of color. Malik Rhassan and Ife Johari Uhuru, black activists from Queens, New York, and Detroit, respectively, started Occupy the Hood to encourage and make space for people of color to join the movement. On October 19, a different group, Occupy Harlem, put out “a call to Blacks, Latinos, and immigrants to occupy their communities against predatory investors, displacement, privatization and state repression.”

Peebottle Farms: What to feed your chickens to get the best eggs? | Grist
"Lately, I've been wondering what I have to feed my chickens to recreate that pasta here in Brooklyn.
I started my search for advice with the cookbook author and teacher Giuliano Bugialli. He said that the Italian chickens that make really orange yolks have brown and "shining" feathers and eat mostly dried whole corn and grains. "Even farro when it was not fashionable as it is now," he said, adding, "I have never seen such chickens in the U.S."
Harold McGee, in his indispensible book, On Food and Cooking, confirms that the yellow color of egg yolks comes from eating corn, as well as alfalfa. This I could do, but Bugialli had suggested that the real magic might lie in the breeding. Next I emailed Mario Batali. He chalks the quality of Italian eggs up to their pasture-based lifestyle that allows them to eat all the bugs and grubs they can find. "Homogenized chicken feed is just an accelerant (to make chickens grow faster) and doesn't add to the flavor of their eggs," he said."Read full article here | Grist

Angela Davis at Occupy Wall St., NYC | NationofChange
Author, activist, Angela Davis spoke at Occupy Wall St. in Washington Square Park on Sunday October 30. Thanking the OWS movement for transforming politics in the universe, she spoke to the brutal police crack-down on the Occupy encampment in her home town of Oakland and supported the call for a national strike on November 2 in response to that violence. She also spoke to the perils of language, calling on the movement to transform the meaning of the words occupation, democracy and unity.
Speaking through the "people's mic," Davis drew particular attention to questions of inclusion and urged the movement to embrace a "complex unity" within the concept of "99 percent."Read Full article here |

Occupy Earth
Give credit where it's due: It's been the genius of the protesters in Zuccotti Park to shift public discourse to whether the distribution of economic burdens and rewards is just and whether the economic system makes us whole or reduces and divides us. It's hard to imagine how we'll address our converging ecological crises without first addressing the way accumulating wealth and power has captured the political system. As long as Washington is dominated and intimidated by giant oil companies, Wall Street speculators, and corporations that can buy influence and even write the rules that make buying influence possible, there's no meaningful way to deal with our economy's addiction to fossil fuels and its dire consequences.
