Gang -- the Assembly Republican Vote Suppressors are taking the Voter ID bill to the floor tomorrow. If you can get to the capitol, we need people to go and sit in the gallery and watch this abomination unfold. These opponents of our liberty deserve to have their cowardly act witnessed by the eyes of real Wisconsinites. We will not forget, nor forgive, this planned assault on democracy.

Wisconsin's voter ID bill

"Wisconsin's bill, up for debate in the Assembly this week, would require voters to show a driver's license, state ID, military ID, passport, naturalization papers or tribal ID to cast a ballot. Student IDs would be allowed, but would have to include a current address, birth date, signature and expiration date. Currently no college or university ID used in the state, including the UW-Madison campus, meet those standards.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates the law could cost more than $5.7 million to implement. That includes $2.2 million in costs for the Government Accountability Board (which includes education and outreach), almost $2 million for the Transportation Department (to cover employee expenses and the cost of free IDs) and more than $1.6 million if universities chose to remake student IDs."

Republicans, in a rapid sequence of votes over the next eight weeks, plan to legalize concealed weapons, deregulate the telephone industry, require voters to show photo identification at the polls, expand school vouchers and undo an early release for prisoners. No single good job coming out of any of that legislation.

Wisconsin state senator Robert Jauch gives a speech near the end of the May 9, 2011 Joint Finance Committee meeting on Assembly Bill 7. This bill imposes very narrow photo ID requirements and would make Wisconsin's voting laws among the most restrictive in the nation.

A Facebook effort urging FSU to cancel its arrangement with the Koch Brothers.
Description
A conservative billionaire who opposes government meddling in business has bought a rare commodity: the right to interfere in faculty hiring at a publicly funded university.

A foundation bankrolled by Libertarian businessman Charles G. Koch has pledged $1.5 million for positions in Florida State University's economics department. In return, his representatives get to screen and sign off on any hires for a new program promoting "political economy and free enterprise."

Traditionally, university donors have little official input into choosing the person who fills a chair they've funded. The power of university faculty and officials to choose professors without outside interference is considered a hallmark of academic freedom.

Under the agreement with the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, however, faculty only retain the illusion of control. The contract specifies that an advisory committee appointed by Koch decides which candidates should be considered. The foundation can also withdraw its funding if it's not happy with the faculty's choice or if the hires don't meet "objectives" set by Koch during annual evaluations.

If you believe in true academic freedom, join this Facebook page in protest of FSU"s arrangement with the Koch brothers. (read less)

Behind Ford’s latest mass layoffs in Australia

"Ford Australia’s recent decision to slash production by 20 percent and lay off another 240 workers—13 percent of its total manufacturing workforce—is the latest in a protracted series of attacks on car workers’ jobs and conditions that is being directly orchestrated by the Labor government. Behind the backs of the workforce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her senior ministers are collaborating with the car companies and trade unions to restructure the entire industry with the aim of boosting profits and “international competitiveness.”" Full Article Here

Last Tuesday, May 3, Grand Rapids and 6 surrounding communities approved a millage for a Bus Rapid Transit system. It will include 10 hybrid electric buses on a 10 mile route downtown. 19 new bus stations will have message boards showing the next bus will arrive in 10 minutes or less.

It’s supposed to feel permanent and powerful, like a train. It will be carried out of the Rapid, the Grand Rapids transit company. Voters agreed to raise $9 million. This will get them about $30 million in matching funds from the federal government. The BRT program can lead to light and heavy rail transit funding later from Washington. West Michigan has become the leader in public transit for the state.

Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus caught up with Dave Bulkowski. He runs the group Disability Advocates of Kent County. They led the successful campaign. Full Article | Michigan Now

Voter Suppression Bills Sweep the Country | Center for Media and Democracy

Voter Suppression Bills Sweep the Country | Center for Media and Democracy

"A wave of voter suppression legislation is emerging from newly elected GOP governors and Republican legislators that would make it much more difficult for traditional Democratic constituencies to vote -- just in time for the 2012 election. About a dozen states are are actively considering legislation that would make voting much more difficult for college students, minorities, the elderly and the disabled. In some states, like Ohio, it is estimated that close to 1 million people would be affected by these changes." Full Article Here | Center for Media and Democracy

"President Obama has it in his power to bring significant transparency to federal elections. Congressional opposition is irrelevant to the signing of executive orders and the enforcement of existing laws. People have the right to know who is funding campaign activities so voters know their business before the government. People also have the right to know whether corporations are being favored for government contracts because of their political donations. And, campaign disclosure laws need to be enforced to be effective. Transparency is essential to reducing the corruption of politics. It is time for the Obama administration to act.
