Judge to decide fate of lawsuit challenging collective bargaining law by week's end

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_71ed75b8-6607-11e0-93e5-001cc4c03286.html

A Dane County judge will decide by the end of the week whether to dismiss Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk’s lawsuit over a new state law limiting collective bargaining for most public employees.
Falk’s lawsuit challenges the law on several fronts, including an alleged open meetings violation by a legislative conference committee, lack of a sufficient quorum by the state Senate when it voted on the conference committee’s bill and the negative impact the law would have on local governments.

Ron Johnson (R-China): Says U.S. Corps SHOULD Get Tax Break for Sending Jobs to China!

http://uppitywis.org/blogarticle/ron-johnson-r-china-says-us-corps-should-get-tax-break-sending-j

Recently the Senate's Budget committee had a hearing on corporate tax subsidies and how they have significantly hampered tax revenues. This is one of the few topics that rookie Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson actually knows something about: The plastic company his father in law gave him has gotten millions in corporate tax subsidies over the years.
But, this is no longer "businessman" Ron Johnson this is Senator Ron Johnson, who recently got elected almost entirely on sounding the alarm of the skyrocketing deficit. Senator Ron Johnson would be all over this, right?!?

GOP Busted: Paying for & Training Tea Party Activists In Guerilla Internet Tactics “Control the Online Dialogue.”

http://current.com/news/93149403_gop-busted-paying-for-training-tea-party-activists-in-guerilla-internet-tactics-control-the-online-dialogue.htm

From the film Astro Turf Wars: How Corporate America Is A Grassroots Revolution, this clip shows Austin James of the conservative Republican funded American Majority training tea party activists on guerrilla internet tactics to “control the online dialogue.”

The footage was shot at the 2009 American Liberty Tour, run by a group of libertarian groups tied to real-estate mogul and Koch associate Howie Rich. The clip is taken from a section of the film showing how libertarian/free-market groups are recruiting tea party protestors into their cause.

Now if only activists on the left would stop spending all their time arguing with each other on e-mail listservs and in Facebook group comments and get the message about how to do this too, American democracy might have a chance to recover from the past 30 years of corporate and religious Republican dominance in the fight for the hearts and minds of the public.

We need to find a way to fight back or we will loose our democracy and we will have a corporate plutocracy!

AUDIO: TODAY'S SPEACH: President Obama On The Deficit And Debt Reduction

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/04/13/135380381/live-blog-president-obama-on-the-deficit-and-debt-reduction

"Saying that lawmakers need to come together in a bipartisan manner as they did in the 1980s and 1990s to tackle the exploding federal deficits and debt, President Obama offered his proposals today for how to get the government's books in order. He said his plan would cut $4 trillion from deficits over 12 years, and that it includes trims in spending on defense and health care, as well as the end of the so-called Bush-era tax cuts for wealthier Americans."

When You Call You Public Official

Michigan Stands for Democracy

"Respect the office of the public servant. It is a sacred duty — whether or not the person currently occupying the office is fully cognizant of its real obligations or not. At any rate, the office-holder works for you. His job is to represent your concerns and your interests to the legislature in Lansing, not to PR the interests or the wildest dreams and wish-lists of some corporation in Wichita or some crypto-lobby in Washington to you.

You are calling your employee to account for the quality of his job performance, including how and where he spent his time while supposed to be working on your clock and payroll. That is all you are doing — and that is your right.

So be a nice boss, but be a firm boss, and don't forget for a moment who is boss."

WASHINGTON -- The budget deal lawmakers struck to avoid a government shutdown was greeted by some with relief, but it has one city already reeling: the capital itself. City officials say Washington was used as a pawn last week's budget bargaining, with new restrictions part of the price of a deal.Full Article Here

Bernie Sanders called it "Robin Hood in reverse" during an interview today with radio host Ed Schultz. As more info became public on the price of averting a gov't shutdown, the senator voiced concern about the middle class bearing the brunt.

"Earlier today, pranky activist group the Yes Men, posing as General Electric, issued a press release announcing that the company would be “gifting its entire 2010 tax refund, worth $3.2 Billion, to the US Treasury on April 18, Tax Day.” Amazingly, the Associated Press ran with the bogus story. And the timing could have been more perfect.

In the past few weeks, it has been widely reported that GE paid no taxes last year despite profits exceeding $14 billion."

Fairfield, CT, 13th April, 2011 - GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt has informed the Obama administration that the company will be gifting its entire 2010 tax refund, worth $3.2 Billion, to the US Treasury on April 18, Tax Day, and will furthermore adopt a host of new policies that secure its position as a leader in corporate social responsibility."

"We want the public to know that we've heard them, and that we know many Americans are going through tough times," said GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt. "GE will therefore give our 2010 tax refund back to the public and allow the public to decide how to spend it."

"In just six weeks, the will of the people of Wisconsin has risen to a thunderous roar that is now taking a major political toll on Wisconsin's leaders. Americans everywhere can accomplish the same when We, the People, choose action.

US Uncut has staged 160 actions against corporate tax cheats in just six weeks, and we're just getting started. The impact of our movement will only continue to grow as more people hear our message and start taking action in their communities.

Instead of merely petitioning these same congressmen who have been bought by the corporations bankrupting our country, this weekend we will be taking the fight directly to the corporations' doors in our own communities." Carl Gibson co-founder of USuncut

Janesville - Rock County: Ryan's Hometown On Path To Poverty

"Sunday's Janesville Gazette reported on the growing poverty facing Janesville's school children. Titled, Pupils feel pinch of poverty, the newspaper failed to touch on any of the possible causes for the decline and also left out scads of pertinent information. One item they left out is the number of homeless school children - over 350. Instead they wrote about the personal struggles of several Janesville students trying to keep their head above water, which isn't difficult to relate to considering this is Rep. Paul Ryan's hometown. To the newspaper's credit, they at least didn't try to hide one important number. The fact that nearly half of Janesville's school district kids live in poverty. You read that right. 47.3% of children in the Janesville school district are living in low-income homes. Of note is a percentage chart the newspaper produced that shows poverty among school children has been on a relentless upward trajectory since 2000, interestingly the beginning of Rep. Paul Ryan's occupation of our district seat in Congress."Full Article Here | Janesville - Rock County

"I commend Senator Durbin and Congressman Larson for introducing the Fair Elections Now Act. It is similar in important ways to the public campaign system that enabled me and many other candidates to run for the Wisconsin State Legislature despite having only average means and without having to depend on special interest funding. Not only will it open the doors of Congress to average Americans, it will take the election process – fundamental to our democratic form of government – back from the special interest influences." Russ Feingold | former US Senator from Wisconsin.

Scandal in Fitzwalkerstan: Top Donor Pleads Guilty in Money-Laundering Scheme to Aid Governor Walker | The Nation

"According to the criminal complaint, Gardner’s own donations exceeded the state’s $10,000 limit for contributions to a gubernatorial candidate. And Gardner also asked employees to make $5,000 contributions to Walker’s campaign, he then reimbursed them himself and the employees with company money.

It is against the law in Wisconsin for a donor to make political contributions in another person’s name. It is, as well, against the law for corporations to make political contributions." Read More| The Nation
