"The whole world is watching to see if the billionaire Koch brothers – who have financed Walker, the Tea Party, and the recent rash of pro-Walker commercials – can successfully move in to a state, destroy its middle-class and hand its public assets directly to private corporations (such as Koch Industries).

The fight right now is in Wisconsin. We are the proving ground for whether Koch and others can implement their plan all over the U.S. If we lose, our state, and our country, will offer far fewer opportunities to the next generation than we have to the current one."

"With recall efforts pending against nearly half of the members of the Wisconsin state Senate and Badger State residents weary of the 18-day shutdown in the legislature caused by the Democratic minority’s exodus to Illinois, the end seems to be in sight.

The overheated rhetoric of the early part of the Democratic walkout has (mostly) given way to statements of acceptance and accommodation. Despite filmmaker Michael Moore trying to rally government workers to keep fighting “the rich,” the steam seems to have gone out of the boiler." according to Chris Stirewalt of FoxNews.com

Michael Moore to Wisconsin protesters: 'Don't give up!' - Isthmus | The Daily Page

Michael Moore to Wisconsin protesters: 'Don't give up!' - Isthmus | The Daily Page(FULL ARTICLE HERE)

"By now, it's unlikely that anyone besides Scott Walker would dispute that the protests at the Wisconsin state Capitol have energized the labor movement, as well as citizens throughout the state and nation. What became clear during raconteur Michael Moore's 30-minute talk this afternoon is that these events have also radicalized the public, in ways no one anticipated and those in power should perhaps fear.

Between a performance by Michelle Shocked and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin telling the audience that "this is the fight of our lives," Moore delivered a rousing speech full of invective toward the ruling class. There was nothing surprising about that. What was surprising is that his speech was received, seemingly from every quarter of the crowd -- estimated from the podium at 50,000 and by police as "tens of thousands" -- with thunderous applause."

MICHAEL MOORE IN MADISON/"WE ARE NOT BROKE"

http://rocknetroots.blogspot.com/2011/03/moore-in-madison-country-is-awash-in.html

THE ROCKNETROOTS COMMENTARY...WHERE ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL

"In his speech Moore said the country is not "broke" as conservatives claim. "The country is awash in wealth and cash," Moore stated "It's just not in your hands. It has been transferred in the greatest heist in history, from the workers and consumers to the banks and portfolios of the uber rich." Moore went on to say that 400 obscenely rich people have more wealth than half of all Americans combined. He also praised the protesters in Madison for arousing the "sleeping giant" of working people "Right now, the earth is shaking and the ground is shifting under the feet of those who are in charge," he said. "Your message has inspired people in all 50 states: 'We have had it.""

Lake protections take big hit in Walker's budget, critics say

RON SEELY | rseely@madison.com | 608-252-6131 madison.com | (7) Comments | Posted: Monday, March 7, 2011 5:45 amshareLake protections take big hit in Walker's budget, critics say

"Tucked away in Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget are what some consider to be dramatic rollbacks in regulations that control the amounts of weed-growing phosphorus going into Wisconsin's lakes. The budget would also substantially scale back requirements for cities and villages to control polluted runoff from areas such as parking lots, streets and construction sites."

"Critics say the changes would undo years of negotiation and compromise that created workable regulations to reduce the levels of pollutants such as phosphorus. They also charge that the proposed changes would so diminish state clean water protections that the federal Environmental Protection Agency could be forced to step in and implement its own regulations." reports Ron Seely of the Wisconsin State Journal

America's union story: Blood, struggle and bargaining for good and bad

"Eighty-one-year-old labor historian Ken Germanson watches the news from home in Milwaukee every night, mystified.

"All those people raising their signs, protesting," he said. "Well, geez, what did our governor think was going to happen?"

Germanson ran the Wisconsin Labor History Society for nearly two decades, an organization that teaches students about the state's union heritage.
"Though tension in Indiana has amounted so far to little more than political name-calling, protests in Wisconsin and Ohio have drawn throngs of people from across the country, turning the debate into a national tug of war between Republicans and Democrats. Media reports and political rhetoric have framed the protests as battles between the working class and the rich. The issue has also drawn out many critics of unions who say that organized labor strikes disrupt public services and inflate wages at a rate that strains economies and taxpayers.""According to Ashley Fantz of CNN
