Emergency Manager Harris claims Benton Harbor supports him | Michigan Messenger
Benton Harbor Emergency Manager Joe Harris said last night that 90 percent of the local citizens believe that he is the “angel of common sense” though he acknowledged that no poll has been taken.
Earlier this month Harris used new powers granted under Public Act 4 — the Emergency Manager law — to remove all decision making power from Benton Harbor’s elected officials.
“They were effectively … fired by the state legislature,” Harris told
Fox 2 News. “… Public Act 4 of 2011 stripped all local government legislators and the mayors and the city officials of the power that they once had. The order that I issued a couple weeks ago simply reiterated the fact that these individuals no longer had the authority that they once had.”
Harris, who formerly served as Chief Financial Officer and as Auditor General for the city of Detroit, said that it is conceivable that he will terminate contracts for public workers in Benton Harbor and he said that Mayor Bing will not be able to address Detroit’s financial problems without authority to change the terms of collective bargaining agreements."View Video Here

Michigan City Chafes Under State Control - NYTimes.com
"Critics say the new powers, granted by the state’s new Republican leadership, are Michigan’s way to shrink benefits for public workers and undermine the strength of labor unions, just as officials have tried in Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Michigan’s state-appointed emergency managers do have authority to set aside union contracts, giving the state, in the eyes of some, the opportunity to crush any local union deals in the name of budget repair.
“It’s dictatorship, plain and simple,” said Dennis Knowles, a city commissioner who sat in a darkened, mostly empty City Hall office the other day."Full Article - NYTimes.com

The new Dictiorial EFM laws is the point of no return. Stand now or be silent forever.
Things are happening quickly now. With the Benton Harbor/Detroit incident and the deteriorating Middle East, not to mention the earth quakes/nuke disaster and ensuing economic downturn, many more cities will have the EFM plan put into action. To me that i...s the point of no return. If we allow the state government to casually replace the elected officials from a city at a whim, based on subjective criteria we will have allowed any pretense to self governance to vanish. No more will you be able to decide which politicians run your city and represent your local neighborhoods; you won’t even have a choice. Your neighbors, being found “too stupid” to manage your own accounts will have all power taken from you. You think government is bad now??? Wait until they are completely unaccountable to YOU. We need to learn everything about the EFM and the laws associated with it. It’s of dire importance that we understand the totality of this and what it means. This summer, will we witness our ability to self govern and our democracy destroyed, without a fight or… will we see it explode onto the center stage? There is little time to act; first we must educate ourselves on the various laws like the EFM. Check out this well written article by Amy http://www.facebook.com/notes/amy-washburn/the-michigan-emergency-financial-manager-efm-law-and-real-property-what-were-not/168627293195504 If you wish to read the actual Michigan law, check here http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2011-2012/publicact/pdf/2011-PA-0004.pdf Benton Harbor was the first city to have its elected officials replaced. WHAT IS SEE RED: HEAR ME?
A day when those who are actually involved in public education have a chance to talk to the public about what is truly going on in our public education system.
WHO DO YOU MEAN BY "THOSE WHO ARE ACTUALLY INVOLVED?"
...
Teachers, paraprofessionals, school custodians, school nurses, school bus drivers, parents, and students.
SO WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
All you need to do is wear red on Saturday, April 30th and wear a pin, a button, a shirt, or hold a sign that says "Ask me about public education." Then, when people approach you to ask about public education, tell them everything you know: what teachers really do on a day-to-day basis, the extra duties that teachers perform for free because they care about their students, how over-reliance on testing has taken the educating out of education; in other words, share THE TRUTH about public education.
