Recall Petitions Being Filed Against Third Wis. GOP State Senator

Another recall effort by Wisconsin Democrats, targeting Republican state senators in reaction to Gov. Scott Walker's anti-public employee union legislation, is coming to a head on Monday, with signatures to be filed against GOP state Sen. Luther Olsen - the third such petition to reach that stage.

"As the Wisconsin State Journal reports, rural Wautoma substitute teacher Ann Schmidt will file 23,000 signatures, far more than the 14,700 minimum needed, though in practice signature efforts often collect an additional buffer against signatures that could be challenged and disqualified for errors."

"Republicans have promised a tough fight for any seats facing recall.
"We're treating this as a full-blown election cycle within an election cycle," said Mark Jefferson, executive director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.
Parties have 10 days after a petition is filed with the state to issue a challenge of its validity. If the petition holds up, an election would be scheduled for a Tuesday six weeks later.

Jefferson acknowledged some Republicans might lose their seats but "I would expect Democrats to face recall elections before this is over as well," he said. "I suspect we'll maintain the (Republican) majority."

Posted in Comments: Steve – “I know it isn't easy.” The weird thing is – it has gotten much easier psychologically b/c I have trained myself internally plus there are SO many more of us. The difficulty lies in not letting the cause take over my entire life. My kids receive much less attention and our family day are now exclusively dedicated to the cause. These are valuable life experiences for them…living civics lessons...and a chance to talk about those who have less than us. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that the exhaustion matches having a newborn baby.

"We need 15, 744 total signatures for recall of Harsdorf. We garnered another 641 signatures in our small city yesterday, while sending some excess volunteers to an neighboring town which compiled another 255 more through their hard work. Through the incredible grass roots efforts of the volunteers in our company, my husband and I have been able to submit 1396 signaturs thus far. Here are some things that I have learned about recalls along the way:"

"Elected himself in a recall election in Milwaukee, Scott Walker's words now seem particularly ironic, as his lapdog Dan Kapanke has had tens of thousands of signatures filed against him to officially be recalled. The grassroots outpouring is the fastest signature trigger to a recall election in Wisconsin history."

"“Create a citizens' recall process for state elected officials in Maine!”

Maine does not have any political process for citizens to recall elected officials, unlike 18 other states. The Maine state constitution provides for impeachment, a legal process, but its never been used to remove a civil officer.

RT @millbot: Randy Hopper, this is your life: "1st recall campaign appears to have enough signatures" -JSOnline jsonline.com/blogs/news/118… #wiunion

"The recall campaign against Sen. Randy Hopper (R-Fond du Lac) appears to have enough signatures to force a recall election, though volunteers don't plan to stop collecting them before next week.

Scott Dillman, a former Department of Corrections employee who is one of the campaign's coordinators, wouldn't say directly Tuesday that volunteers had collected the 15,269 signatures required to force the election. But he said that volunteers were planning a last push for signatures on election day next Tuesday, and that he's hoping that the total collected will be "closer to 30,000 than 15,000.""
