Facebook's 'Subscribe' Button: 5 Things You Need To Know
Facebook's latest feature has introduced an important new term, "subscribing," that describes a novel way to connect on the social networking site. Now, you must choose between "friending" someone and "subscribing" to them.
So what's the difference? Here's how Facebook explains it:
You should only add someone as a friend when you know them personally. If you don't know someone personally but want to hear what they have to say, subscribing is a good option. When you subscribe to someone, you'll only be able to see their public updates.
When you request to add a person as your "friend," she must review and approve the request. On the other hand, if someone has opted to include the "subscribe" button on her profile, you can subscribe to see her public updates without her having to review the request, or without being friends with her (Note that she'll be able to see that you subscribed to her). Facebook "friends" can see any profile information a user has made available to that particular group--it might include tagged photos and videos, comments, status updates, wall posts, and contact information, among other details--whereas subscribers can only view public updates.

The War on Higher Education | History News Network
"Public universities seeking greater autonomy have cited the need for greater “flexibility.” But the combination of union-busting and the semi-privatization of “entrepreneurial” public universities creates the probability of creating institutions with little academic integrity."
“Republicans in Wisconsin,” Cronon wrote in his op-ed. in the New York Times on March 21, “are seeking to reverse civic traditions that for more than a century have been among the most celebrated achievements not just of their state, but of their own party as well.”
While not all states have the strong traditions that Wisconsin does, the civic traditions in many states are being challenged by the new and radical legislation being introduced. Much of it, as Cronon reports, is not home-grown legislation but part of boilerplate legislation developed by ALEC. The organization’s strategy is that by introducing these radical bills across the nation at the state level in a shotgun approach, they will make progress in reaching their goals incrementally. The organization notes that only 12 to 15 percent of the hundreds of bills introduced in state legislatures each year pass into law but over time, these laws promise to have a huge impact.
Further, using a political strategy that writer Naomi Klein has recently dubbed a “shock and awe,” the proponents of this legislation have often been part of creating conditions in which they use the pressure of a crisis atmosphere to push through their “reforms.” In Wisconsin, for example, Scott Walker was elected with a surplus but quickly funded several new conservative projects and thereby helped bring about a budget crisis. Similarly, at least half of Ohio’s $8 billion deficit was generated by sweeping tax cuts, including a 21 percent reduction in the state’s progressive income tax."

Wisconsin has a LAW ss 19.90 which states "Whenever a governmental body holds a meeting in open session, the body shall make a reasonable effort to accommodate any person desiring to record, film or photograph the meeting."
Seems pretty straightforward, but the Assembly has a "rule" which bans any and all cameras from the gallery.
There was a recent US circuit court case about filming police where they ruled that citizens have the right to film public officials while in a public space, while they are serving in their public capacity and also included
"Gathering information about government officials in a form that can readily be disseminated to others serves a cardinal First Amendment interest,"
Also seems pretty straight forward, but not in WI with the Fitz's in charge. People were dragged out of the gallery using pain compliance and handcuffs simply for SILENTLY HOLDING A CAMERA DURING AN OPEN MEETING.
The Shock Doctrine | Naomi Klein
We are being attacked on all sides. It seems that before you understand what is happening in front of you someone else whacks you fron behind. While reeling from that a hammer comes down on your toe. This is all the "shock and awe" strategy used around the world to destroy democracies for the last 40 years. Read Naomi Klein's book. We have to stay cool and coordonate our efforts to fight all at once. It is important to realize that this is one coordinated attack on the American Dream.

Wisconsin State Senator Lena Taylor State: Milwaukee District: 4th Senate Party:Democratic | |
About | Here to serve you! |
---|---|
Biography | A life-long Milwaukee resident, Senator Lena Taylor is serving her second term in the Wisconsin State Senate, representing the 4th Senate District, including northern portions of the City of Milwaukee as well as parts of Wauwatosa and Glendale. In early 2011, the Senator took a principled and dramatic stand against Governor Scott Walker’s goal of ending collective bargaining as part of the “Wisconsin 14”—the fourteen Democratic Senators that left the state in order to prevent the passing of the “Budget Repair Bill” that would strip away the right of workers and end democracy in the public sector work place. Taylor and her colleagues were and are revered by many for their stand in support of worker’s rights in Wisconsin. The National Education Association awarded Taylor and the rest of the Wisconsin 14 individually their 2011 Friend of Education Award, the first time ever the award was granted to a collective group’s action. |

Would the Walker Administration accept the federal funds if they were awarded? Walker has turned back awarded funds in public health and for rural IT connectivity in a number of cases. Hopefully if Congress can pass the American Jobs Act our Gov. will enable Wisconsin to participate to create desperately needed jobs.
State Superintendent Huppenthal determined to keep accents out of classrooms |
"In the last few years, Arizona has taken a giant step backwards in the arena of civil rights. Our lawmakers have used fear and ideology to implement discriminatory legislation against Latinos and those believed to be “illegal.” We have cast doubt on an entire population of citizens based on skin color and accent.
One would hope the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would no longer be needed. But as Arizona legislators try to whitewash their efforts at discrimination, it seems obvious the act is as relevant today as it was 47 years ago.
When we find Spanish accents offensive enough to require legislation, we know we’ve turned our back on cultural diversity and crossed a dangerous line. This is nativism, and this is not the Arizona I know and love."

Bob Turner Wins Anthony Weiner’s House Seat www.nytimes.com
David Calderon
This is what happens when Democrats sit on their hands and count their chickens. before they hatch. It was a perfect storm. And republican bob turner got the help of some local 'democrat's' whose interests are entirely related to Israel not the U.S. economy or unemployment or medicare and social security but Israel. Nice job suckers.
- Ed Jordan David don't you think the DNC maybe somewhat responsable? Pluss a guy not willing to do the work required? They thought this was in the bag and by the time they figered out they were behind they lost? I agree that tte state of Israel had been a factor but I feel we lost one we should not have lost! 90 years the seat was a Dem seat 90 years!
- David Calderon Completely agree Ed. Dems were caught with their pants down (no pun intended) they better have better strategies in the future or this will not be the only seat they lose.

Whomever runs against Walker should be working for hand counting of the votes.
- Betsy Wilcox But there are over 7500 voters, so if I read you correctly the Clerk needs to have prior GAB permission to hand count my ballot. Am I missing something here?
- Bryan Bliss sorry, its confusing, a clerk (over7500) cannot decide to count all the ballots by hand, without prior gab approval, but all write in votes are hand counted regardless of how many there are. if all the voters voted write in, even while their chosen candidate was printed on the ballot, all those votes would indeed be hand counted, legally.
- Betsy Wilcox Ok-that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks for keeping with this, Bryan.
