A New Season of Protest

The fall of discontent has begun. This Saturday, September 17th, tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people will take to the streets and squares of financial districts in dozens of cities around the world in a global day of action against the excessive power of the banking sector — and for a more just, more stable, and more sustainable global financial system.

The state House passed a bill today that would prohibit schools from deducting union dues from teachers’ paychecks. The bill doesn’t say they don’t have to provide this service, it says they are prohibited from providing this service.

Emergency Financial Manager in Benton Harbor and the Austerity Age in Michigan

September 5th, 2011 Lansing, Michigan - Reverend Pinkney, a long time resident and activist in Benton Harbor will speak about the Emergency Financial Manager imposed on Benton Harbor with new powers approved by the government this past spring. Benton Harbor is the first place the controversial emergency financial manager (EFM) legislation has been put in place, removing even the illusion of democracy from local government by stripping elected officials of any decision making power and handing it to the EFM, who among other things, has the authority to void union contracts. To date, at least 200 Emergency Financial Managers have been trained by the state, which makes clear that Benton Harbor is only the beginning.

In Benton Harbor, Pinkney is active in confronting the politicians, corporations and court systems that deny Benton Harbor residents their rights and any sense of justice on a daily basis. In a recent speech on August 26th in Los Angeles Pinkney said, " I will speak about Corporations and Government working together against the people. I will also speak about me being the first pastor to ever be sent to prison for quoting the bible." Additionally, Pinkney will speak about the un-democratic Emergency Financial Manager in Benton Harbor and what this age of austerity means for the rest of the state.

Senator Sherrod Brown | Senator for Ohio: Press Releases - Sen. Brown Announces New Bill to Prevent Members of Congress from Collecting Pensions Until They Reach Social Security Retirement Age

“Raising the Social Security retirement age might sound fair to politicians who come to work every day in a suit and tie, but it’s a nonstarter for working Ohioans who stand on their feet all day long in a restaurant or on a factory floor,” Brown said.

Senator Taylor today announced to the press, an active boycott of all products made by Walker wealthy supporters.
I CHALLENGE ALL STATE DEMOCRATIC SENATORS, ALL DEMOCRATIC ASSEMBLY PERSONS, TO STAND WITH SENATOR TAYLOR, AND DECLAIR A BOYCOTT OF PRODUCTS MADE BY THE WALKER WEALTHY SUPPORTERS. FOR TOO LONG NOW, THE SUBJECT HAS BEEN AVOIDED BY THEM.
Let's hit them where it hurts and they only understand, the pocketbooks.
    • Stephanie Purvis Not sure I agree with her about the two gas stations she mentioned. Personally, I will only boycott those who've contributed significant amounts of money and have a greater impact on policy.

    • Kevin Kratsch If you do a search, you can get the info you want. I guess my feeling is, those little things add up to big things. Ultimately, it is an individual decision, for sure.

What Wall Street doesn’t want us to know about oil prices - The Washington Post

What Wall Street doesn’t want us to know about oil prices - The Washington Post

‎"Now it is appropriate to lift the veil of secrecy in the oil futures market. The American people have a right to know how much excessive speculation has driven up oil prices and which Wall Street firms are doing it."

Opinions

What Wall Street doesn’t want us to know about oil prices

The top six financial institutions in this country own assets equal to more than 60 percent of our gross domestic product and possess enormous economic and political power. One of the great questions of our time is whether the American people, through Congress, will control the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street, or whether Wall Street will continue to wreak havoc on our economy and the lives of working families.

I represent Vermont, a rural state where many workers drive long distances to jobs that pay $12 an hour or less. Many seniors living on fixed incomes heat their homes with oil during our cold winters. These people have asked me to do all that I can to lower outrageously high gasoline and heating-oil prices. I intend to do just that.

"Jan BenDor is the statewide coordinator for the Michigan Election Reform Alliance. MERA’s main concern, according to Ben-Dor, is the protection of Michigan’s election integrity. “We have an election system that is riddled with problems and is very vulnerable to manipulation. We vote, but we aren’t really sure our votes are being counted,” Ben-Dor said."
