Maddow on Benton Harbor EFM takeover | Michigan Messenger

Maddow on Benton Harbor EFM takeover | Michigan Messenger

By Ed Brayton | 04.19.11

Rachel Maddow had a segment on her show last evening looking at the controversy over the Emergency Manager in Benton Harbor nullifying election results and forbidding elected bodies in that city from taking any actions whatsoever. She specifically cited the Michigan Messenger.

Maddow specifically mentioned the Jean Klock Park situation, a story that the Messenger has been following closely for years — and most of the media in the state have been ignoring. A large chunk of that park, deeded to the city on the condition that it remain a public park forever, was leased to private developers to be made into a golf course.

All Against The Haul | All Against The Haul

"All Against the Haul is a homegrown, four-state effort working to stop the construction of a permanent industrial corridor for massively oversized loads to the Alberta Tar Sands through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

From Portland to Seattle, Kooskia to Choteau, we build bridges between communities and non-traditional allies, and between grassroots volunteers and people of influence in county seats, state capitals, and in Washington, DC.

We are ranchers and outfitters, tea party members and liberals, tribal nations and truckers - working together to pressure elected officials to stand up for the integrity of our communities, the safety of our roads, and the strength of our economies.

We are anyone and everyone who cares about our economy, our homelands, and our way of life. We are All Against The Haul."

HELP! We need EVERYBODY who possibly can to send emails and make phone calls about this. NOW. TODAY. This picture shows what almost a hundred miles of wild and scenic will look like if Exxxon gets their way! These trees on USFS land belong to *us*, the US Taxpayer, not tax-dodging Exxxon. Tell the forest service officials to do their job and PROTECT OUR FOREST!!!
Wall Photos
Big Oil's wish is the Clearwater National Forest's command...or so it seems. Ex...xon demanded that all trees along Hwy 12 be trimmed up to 32 feet high and 3 feet from the fog line, with no regard for the Wild and Scenic corridor and the majestic trees that line the route. Please help us remind our public officials at the USFS that those are OUR trees - not Exxon's. Contact these officials today:

We are Really Vigilant about Trolls on our Site | Heartland Revolution

Heartland Revolution's Response to My Letter
RESPONSE FROM HEARTLAND REVOLUTION

From | Heartland Revolution

Dear Bev,

Thank you so much for your email and we would greatly appreciate any help you can offer to get the word out. We are really vigilant about trolls on our site so go ahead and blast away on getting traffic to the page. We have seen that social networking can provide a great means to grow the movement while exposing what is really going on in the area affected. I look forward to working with you side-by-side as we end the tyranny that the majority of this nation is being subjected to.

Thank you,
John Waltz

My Letter to John Waltz of Heartland Revolution

Apr 21, 2011

Dear Heartland Revolution,

I am a Wisconsin Protester... I have been involved now for over two months with the uprising here... I have also been involved with a couple of Michigan groups following and connected with people there. It has been helpful for both states as we have been able to provide support and share info and strategies. It has been through our communications that we have been able to clearly identify the larger picture early on....and have a heads up for what we might be witnessing in our own states.

I have been primarily focused on the cyber-community. It has been quite a rapid development with a lot of mobilizing quickly to address the need for connection and communication. Just two weeks ago... a new page grew to five thousand people over the course of a weekend. This was an issue page related to the investigation of Kathy Nickolaus and voter fraud. While there was great excitement and energy with the development of this page there were for the first time many trolls. That was a tough weekend for all of us and our candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg got hit so hard she had to close down her FB page to public posts.

The Wisconsin protest cyber community had to learn how to protect itself from this situation. It turns out that there are two basic ways and one involves the attention of the administrator and the other is way to block oneself.

I am framing the situation as I would like to spread the word and encourage people to join the Heartland FB page as a way to follow the situation. I am encouraging citizens to serve as "cyber witnesseses". It means I would make the site more public and encourage people to let others know and the link would be posted on larger sites where we can find people beyond the midwest... I do not want to do this without your permission and without you understanding that if this was to happen we would NEED your help removing the trolls as quickly as possible...to keep the site safe for communications. I can be of assistance but we would need to discuss options for achieving this.

It is time for this movement to grow again and sites like yours are important gateways to information and interactivity. Please let me know if I should proceed to promote this site beyond the Wisconsin protest community. Please feel free to contact me by email or friend me on Facebook for a more direct connection...Bev Richey | Milwaukee.

Thank you for all your work and support of Benton Harbor and I look forward to continuing to connect with your organization as we grow this protest movement. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours,

Bev Richey

P.S. Here is a link to one of the other Michigan Protest FB pages that I am archiving and recommending, I will do something similar for your page... the question is how much exposure do you want me/us to give it.

FIRST attack o CITIZENS UNITED decision... we're on a ROLL. (See next article for more)

"A little over a year ago the Supreme Court of the United States made a controversial ruling that says corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited. The case known as Citizens United v Federal Election Commission allows corporations to use their general funds to buy campaign ads that was prohibited under federal law, and opened the door for unlimited contributions by corporations as well as unions. The high court cited the 1st Amendment’s guarantee of the right of free speech, and it was the first time a corporate entity was treated like a person. Detractors of the ruling cried foul and correctly pointed out that, “The Supreme Court has handed lobbyists a new weapon. A lobbyist can now tell any elected official: if you vote wrong, my company, labor union or interest group will spend unlimited sums explicitly advertising against your re-election.” The ruling also opened the door for foreign governments to affect the outcome of United States elections." Dave Meslin: The antidote to apathy | Video on TED.com

Thanks, Milo. Positive, empowering message for those already involved and those who'd like to be involved in their community/world.

TED Talks Local politics -- schools, zoning, council elections -- hit us where we live. So why don't more of us actually get involved? Is it apathy? Dave Meslin says no. He identifies 7 barriers that keep us from taking part in our communities, even when we truly care.

"How often do we hear that people just don't care? How many times have you been told that real, substantial change isn't possible because most people are too selfish, too stupid or too lazy to try to make a difference in their community? I propose to you today that apathy as we think we know it doesn't actually exist, but rather, that people do care, but that we live in a world that actively discourages engagement by constantly putting obstacles and barriers in our way.

Charitable status: Groups who have charitable status in Canada aren't allowed to do advocacy. This is a huge problem and a huge obstacle to change, because it means that some of the most passionate and informed voices are completely silenced, especially during election time. Which leads us to the last one, which is our elections.

"As long as we believe that people, our own neighbors, are selfish, stupid or lazy, then there's no hope. But we can change all those things I mentioned. We can open up city hall. We can reform our electoral systems. We can democratize our public spaces."

My main message is, if we can redefine apathy, not as some kind of internal syndrome, but as a complex web of cultural barriers that reinforces disengagement, and if we can clearly define, we can clearly identify, what those obstacles are, and then if we can work together collectively to dismantle those obstacles, then anything is possible."
