Art Exhibition | Allegories of Good and Bad Government

ALLEGORIES OF GOOD AND BAD GOVERNMENT

23.04 - 29.05.2011

In the context of the exhibition Allegories of Good and Bad Government artists and politicians live together from May 1 to 4 to participate day and night in an intensive debate concerning the deeply rooted connections between their practices. Their aim: to come to an understanding and break through the status-quo that defines the current relationship between art and politics.
From April 23 through May 29 the exhibition is opened daily from 12 PM until 6 PM. Between May 1 and 4 the space where the debate takes place is not accessible to the public, but the debate can be followed in written form on a screen in the exhibition space. From 8:30 PM to 11 PM all spaces are open and visitors are welcome to speak with the participants. The conversation can also be followed through this web site.
Free admission.

"As you probably know, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder recently signed legislation passed by the Republican-dominated House and Senate that gives State-appointed Emergency Financial Managers (EFMs) historically broad and sweeping powers. These new powers allow the EFM to cancel or modify contracts (including with unions) and even to fire the municipality's government.

Today, for the first time, an EFM did just that. According to a press release from the Michigan AFL-CIO, Joseph L. Harris, EFM for Benton Harbor, Michigan issued "an order prohibiting all action by all city boards, commissions, authorities and other entities, except as authorized by the emergency manager." First Read - NBC/WSJ poll: Government shutdown blame game

"A plurality of 37 percent say they would blame congressional Republicans if the current budget disagreement leads to a shutdown of the federal government, while 20 percent say they would blame President Obama and another 20 percent would blame congressional Democrats."

Will the Public Blame Paul Ryan if There's a Shutdown? | Mother Jones

"Recent polling shows that more voters are inclined to blame Democrats than Republicans for a government shutdown. But the GOP may have shot itself in the foot by deciding to introduce Paul Ryan's controversial, entitlement-slashing budget plan for next year the very same week they move towards a shutdown."

"As details of Gov. Scott Walkers corporate takeover of state government are revealed piece by piece, one gets the sensation the whole state is coming down with a case of shingles. From trashing a half-century of successful public employee collective bargaining to ending recycling and kicking tens of thousands off BadgerCare, or the fracturing of the states university system, the dawning of every day brings a sickening sense that we are now in service to a state by, for and of the corporation."
