Grand Rapids ‘Gets’ Transit « Michigan Now

Last Tuesday, May 3, Grand Rapids and 6 surrounding communities approved a millage for a Bus Rapid Transit system. It will include 10 hybrid electric buses on a 10 mile route downtown. 19 new bus stations will have message boards showing the next bus will arrive in 10 minutes or less.

It’s supposed to feel permanent and powerful, like a train. It will be carried out of the Rapid, the Grand Rapids transit company. Voters agreed to raise $9 million. This will get them about $30 million in matching funds from the federal government. The BRT program can lead to light and heavy rail transit funding later from Washington. West Michigan has become the leader in public transit for the state.

As the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade wound its way through the streets of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, protesters waiting around every turn in to voice their displeasure in the state's new financial manager law.

Groups of demonstrators from around Michigan and even from out of state took advantage of the public appearance by Governor Snyder to raise their voices against the Michigan's new emergency financial manager law. The law gives EFM's like Benton Harbor's Joseph Harris the authority to dissolve local governmental bodies.

Some protesters, led by the AFL-CIA, came from as far away as Kentucky.

"People are waking up," said Betsy Coffia, who traveled from Traverse City, Mich. to protest the parade. "Michigan didn't have a Wisconsin, things just sneaked in behind us. We're starting to realize that unless we the people start getting engaged,and make our voices heard, we're going to lose what we thought we had."

February 4, 2011 - Court Denies Plaintiff's Leave to Appeal

On Friday, February 4th the Michigan Supreme Court issued a shocking 6 to1 decision that there would be no further review of our leave to appeal and ordered our application be denied. The sole reason given in the Court Order was, “… because we are not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this Court.” The news wasn’t released until Saturday, February 5, 2011.

We are enormously displeased with the court’s decision and feel that aside from Justice Stephen Markman, the court got it tragically wrong. Obviously Justice Markman agrees with our arguments as in the Court Order he made direct statements in his dissenting opinion in reference to our arguments:

“… I believe that the City’s use of Jean Klock Park, by leasing portions of it for 105 years to a private commercial entity, the Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment, Inc., for its use as a golf course, constitutes a breach of faith … Although the City prevails today, it, and other communities throughout our state, may well come out losers tomorrow as later generations of philanthropists look at the legacy of J. N. and Carrie Klock and come to question the faithfulness of government in upholding their intentions after they too have passed. These Republicans are being targeted because they won narrow victories in November 2010 and most are in traditionally blue (Democratic) districts (like Mark Ouimet in the 52nd District, i.e. MY district.)

"Over 100,000 people in Madison, Wisconsin were joined by thousands of other Americans around the country in protest of Gov. Scott Walker’s attempt to strip collective bargaining rights from the state’s unionized workers, but you would not have known any of this if you watched cable news on Saturday as the coverage of the protests ranged from disappointing (MSNBC) to scant (CNN) to non-existent (Fox News). All three cable networks share something else in common besides their decision to ignore today’s rallies. CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News along with most other forms of media have decided that liberal protests aren’t newsworthy. They believe that the ratings and the money are in the right, not the left. The three cable networks are corporate owned and only for the purpose of profit. They don’t care about journalism or their obligation to inform the public.

This is all about dollars, and the outdated notion that the most profitable way to run a cable news outlet is to be like Fox News, which is why CNN keeps hiring more and more right wingers and has hopped into bed with the Tea Party Express.

There is a deeper bias evident in the case of the Wisconsin rallies. The corporate ownership of these networks, like most businesses, is anti-union. They assume that all of America is also anti-union, and they have conveniently ignored all the polling that shows the American people are behind the protesters in order to rationalize ignoring the protests.
